一,阅读判断 (第1-10题,每题1分,共10分)

Our children and grandchildren may not have a chance to visit many of the most famous places around the world. War, weather, age, traffic and pollution damage these famous places. Looking after these places often costs more than one country can afford.

In the early 1970s, world governments decided that if they joined together, they would be able to

preserve our history. If every country paid some money, they said, it would be possible to look after important historic places. Also, if they discovered that a monument needed urgent help, they would have money for repairs. For these reasons, countries around the world united to form the World Heritage Organization in 1972. Today, the organization helps to maintain and restore the most important places from our history.

However, one of the biggest problems for historic places is vandalism. People sometimes enter the sites and destroy or damage the buildings. At some sites, such as Stonehenge in England, governments have built high fences to protect the site from vandals.

There are many different ideas about how to solve the problem of vandalism. Some experts say that if guards patrolled the sites, vandals would not be able to get in. Some experts say that if they fixed more

television cameras, they would not need so many guards. Other experts say that the best solution is education. If people learned to respect history, they would not destroy or damage it. They would also want to spend money looking after old places. For this reason, the World Heritage Organization helps to spread information about the value of historic sites.

In 1909 an English newspaper offered £1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an airplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colorful. One is Louis Bleriot. He owed a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was already well known as a pilot because he had crashed several times.

Some people laughed at him. One man said, "He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in a crash!" But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about airplane design.

The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. "Oh, well," he said, "If I'm going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now." Latham was the first to try the flight across the Channel. Ten kilometers from the French coast, his plane had engine trouble. It crashed into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette. Bleriot took off six days later He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a

farmer's field. When he did so, a customs officer rushed up to his plane. Planes havechanged since then but customs officers have not. "Have you anything to declare?" the officer demanded.

三,概括段落大意和补全句子 (第16-25题,每题1分,共10分)

1 The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in 1970 as a small important race. Only 127 people ran and just 55 of them finished. They ran around central park four times, few people watched them run. However, over the years the marathon grew and became more popular.

2 Today people come from all over the world to run in the marathon. Runners must be at least 18 years of old, but there is no age limit. In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old man. Recently, more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon. Large crowds cheered the runners and offered them cold drinks and encouragement. 3 The course(路线) of the marathon has changed, too. Instead of running around central park, the runners go through the five districts of New York City: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base(基座) of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then they go up through queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finished in central park in Manhattan. The complete course is 26.2 miles, and takes the best runners less than 3 hours.

4 Although it has changed since 1970, the New York City Marathon is always exciting. Through the years, many unusual events have happened during the marathon. For example, Pat Tuz and Jone Weibaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then they ran the race with their party members, some people run the whole marathon as a family. Other people run the race backward.

5 In the fall of 1992, Fred Lebow, the founder of the New York City marathon, slowly ran his last race. He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In October 1994,Fred died. However, the New York City Marathon, and all its excitement, will continue for many years to come.

七、短文写作 (第51题,30分)

Recently it seems that among the students who choose to study abroad, there are more and more teenagers who study in high schools or even elementary schools.

Many people, especially the parents, think it will certainly do good to their chidren because the independent life will make them learn confidence and perseverance. Moreover, the quality of overseas education is often higher, thus the child stands a better chance of entering a better university and getting a better job in the future.

After careful consideration, I have to say the above view is more than biased. On the

one hand, early independent life is not necessarily good, if the child cannot receive proper guidance and tender care from both teachers and parents. On the other hand, the educational quality is also a question—

too many foreign schools aim at earning money. When the children come back, who can guarantee that they can adapt to the fierce competition here?

We can see clearly that although teenagers' studying abroad may bring favorable results there are still a lot to worry about. It seems necessary for young students to make a careful investigation before going abroad.
