Your children’s teacher will be providing extra time for test preparation. This school year’s test will be held on January 8 and 9. The test preparation time is open to all students, and we strongly encourage your children to attend.
This year we are changing the time for our test preparation: it will be on Thursday mornings from 8:10 to 8:50. This helps children who ride the bus and cannot stay for the after-school period. It also helps avoid conflicts with after-school activities.
Danielle and Marina will be working with the recent new test takers 6 days on the following Thursdays: 15th, Nov; 29th, Nov; 6th, Dec; 13th, Dec.; 20th, Dec. and 3rd, Jan.
Besides the test preparation lectures on these dates, teachers are already putting test preparation into their usual courses. We are finding that we can help our students to be both skilful and whole-hearted readers and test takers — after all, we all know that the best test preparation is good reading and writing training.
What can you do at home? Again, the best and most effective test preparation for the ELA test is reading and more reading. The research is quite clear — students who do well in the tests are those who are good readers. Reading not only builds reading ability, it also helps build confidence — important for successful test taking! But do discourage your children from spending too much time on books that are too hard or even a bit too hard. Children best develop comprehension skills when they are reading books just right for them(too easy doesn’t hurt here either).
Finally, on Friday, December 7, we will have a morning lecture on the ELA. Please pay attention!

Twelve years ago, a young traveler named Rhett Butler from San Francisco, California, visited the Sabah rainforest on Malaysian Borneo. In one area of the rainforest, he watched a bird flying through the trees. The beautiful sight left quite an impression on him. But weeks later, back home, Rhett Butler got the news that trees had been cut down in the area he visited.
That experience led Rhett Butler to begin writing a book about rainforests and threats to their existence. But he did not publish the book. Instead, in 1999, he used his research for the book to create a website. The site is Mongabay. Com. His purpose was to inform the public about tropical rainforests. But the subject quickly developed. As a former businessman, he became a respected writer of science and environmental stories.
The popularity of Mongabay. Com attracted advertisers. Small ads on the site pay for its operations. Mongabay. Com has grown and led to other sites. For example, there is a site for children which is called kids. Mongabay. Com. Another one, WildMadangascar. Org, is all about the island nation that Rhett Butler calls his favorite place.
To keep his website going, he travels around the world on several major trips each year. His working tools are a laptop computer, cameras and sometimes diving equipment. He often calls on experts for information. For example, he interviewed Alison Jolly, a top experts on lemurs(狐猴). A new study has found that honeybees can recognize a pattern based on numbers. If the bees learn to recognize three blue dots, then later they can find three yellow stars, three yellow lemons or three purple grapes.
Honeybees are pretty clever. They can tell which objects in a group are similar, and which different. They can even notice and remember landmarks they pass on their way to get their food. “I have been studying honeybees since 1980, and I am often surprised by our results. The bee is smart,” says Shaowu Zhang of the Australian National University in Camberra.
Zhang and his team trained about 20 honeybees to fly through two holes marked with either two or three blue dots. On the other side, the bees found two exits(出口). Each exit was marked with a pattern, either two or three blue dots. If the bees remembered the first pattern, and picked they matched the patterns, they would get a reward.
The honeybees may not count “one, two, three” the way we do. But the bees got their sugar snack about 70 percent of the time, which led the researchers to conclude that they were able to discover “sameness”.
Then the tests got harder. The scientists wanted to see whether the bees got their sugar snack about 70 percent of the time, which led the researchers to conclude that they were able to discover “sameness”.
Then the tests got harder. The scientists wanted to see whether the bees could match new patterns. The bees might have to match two blue dots to two yellow lemons and later on, three green leaves to three yellow stars. Even in these more difficult tests, the bees could tell the difference between two objects and three.
71. According to the text, how does the honeybee recognize the pattern?
A. By observing the number of the objects. B. By observing the colours of the objects.
C. By observing the shapes of the objects D. By observing the dots on the objects.
72. Why does Shaowu Zhang think honeybees are smart?
A. Because they can find ways to help the researchers.
B. Because they can find the food they want without any help.
C. Because they can tell one thing from another easily.
D. Because they can count from one to three.
73. The underlined word “treat” in Paragraph 3 probably means “____________”
A. care B. praise C. benefit D. reward
74. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Honeybees can be trained to count.
B. Honeybees can match the patterns most of the time.
C. Honeybees can tell the differences of all objects.
D. Honeybees know how to match different colors.
75. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Trained Bees Can Do Anything B. Bees Are the Cleverest Insects in the World
C. Smart Bees Know Two from Three D. Bees Can Tell Difference the Way People Do

For a long time, IQ was considered the leading factor in success. However, as more studies looked into the lives of those with high IQs, it became clear that this theory didn’t hold up. Many people with high IQs have lives filled with work and relationship failures.
In 1995, a new concept way of thinking about success and happiness was introduced in a book by Daniel Goleman called “Emotional Intelligence”. In what was labeled(标记) “a groundbreaking concept”, Goleman created the term “emotional intelligence” and defined it as the ability to develop and keep loving relationships with others, be self-aware, and have a strong sense of the need to give back.
Based on brain and behavioral research, people with high EQs were found to be those who truly succeeded at work and in their personal lives, establishing meaningful relationships.
However, people usually pay more attention to their intellect than their emotions. We can see this not only from the lives of the children but also the adults. For example, lots of parents are glad to see their children to get high sores at school but neglect that they can do nothing except that, and some businessmen ________ but have a mess life at home. control our emotions and to follow them, and this ability to manage our emotions lets us work more easily, and to get where we want to be rather than where we don’t.

Spring is a wonderful season to celebrate rebirth and new life. The long, cold winter is over. The weather is warmer and sunnier. The trees again have leaves and the flowers are blooming. The season represents hope, joy and beauty. At this time, many people think of this classical music piece — Spring, which shows happiness.
