Young Japanese people are also going overseas in search of things they cannot find at home---such as freedom from social norms(规范) and more adventurous jobs. Working holidays have shot up in popularity in Japan in the past few years. According to the Japan Association for Working Holiday Makers, a total of 16,871 Japanese youths got working-holiday visas last year, up from 1,780 in 1985.
Japan started the working-holiday visa programme together with Australia. They set up the programme also with Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, South Korea and Britain.
The visas, issued (发行) to individuals only once in a lifetime, are available to
people between the ages of 18 and 30, except in the UK, which accepts people from 18 to 25.
Nearly 9,000 youths from Japan went to Australia in 2000. Canada was the second most popular destination.
“About 60 to 70 percent of those in the working-holiday programme are women.
A main reason that young people go overseas with the working-holiday visas is to train their foreign language ability, so they can get better jobs when they return to Japan. Other reasons include looking for challenges overseas and “finding themselves.”
