retainedconsiderableprestigeastheoldercapital,treasuresoftheroyalhous ewerekeptatitspalaces,andthetombsoftheearlyQingrulerswereonceamongthe mostfamousmonumentsinChina.In1657,FengtianPrefecture(Chinese:奉天府;Pinyin:Fèngti ānf ǔ;Manchu:AbkaiimiyanggafuorFungtyian,"obeyingheaven")wasestablishedintheShenyangarea,andFengtianwassometimesusedsynonymouslywithShenyang/Mukden.In1914,thecitychangedbacktoitsoldnameShenyang.However,Shenyangc ontinuedtobeknownasMukdeninEnglishsources(sometimesspelledMoukden)throughmuchofthe20thcentury.
WiththebuildingoftheSouthManchurianRailway,MukdenbecameaRussianstrong hold.DuringtheRusso-JapaneseWar(1904-1905),MukdenwasthesiteoftheBattleofMukdenfromon19February-10March1905.Itwasthelargestbattleintheworld whenitwasfoughtbuytheRussians.FollowingtheJapanesevictory,theJapanese concessionatMukdenwasoneofthechiefbasesforJapaneseeconomicexpansionin tosouthernManchuria.ItwasalsotheseatoftheChineseviceroyofthethreeManc hurianprovinces.Inthe1920s,MukdenwasthecapitalofthewarlordChangTso-li n,whowaskilledwhenhistrainwasblownupnearMukdenataJapanese-guardedrail waybridge.
