第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B 、C 和D) 中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
How can you help kids cope with (对付)stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can improve coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. Whether they need to talk with you or just be in the same room with you, make yourself available.
Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after a tiring day of work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day-especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’re important to you.
Help your child deal with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few sol utions. For example, he should cut back on afterschool activities, spending more time talking with his parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal.
You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time, but not too far ahead of time, that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.Remember that some level of stress is normal.Let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or
anxious and that other people share those feelings, too.
When kids can’t or won’t discuss these problems, try talking about your own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor (顾问)or other mental health experts.
Most parents have the skills to cope with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior continues to exist, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.
36.What is the purpose of the text?

A. Their kids are growing so fast. B. They have too much housework.
C. Their kids are losing interest in them. D. They are tired out after work.
38.You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because________.
A. it does no good to your kids B. it doesn’t work in practice
C. your kids may not feel stressed D. your kids don’t want to listen

A. Normal people share the same feelings.
B. It is normal for kids to have some stress.
C. Kids should get rid of the negative feelings.
D. Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious.

When was the last time you did something really fun with one of your parents-just the two of you?
Parents who take their young children to music, swimming and art classes often
stop arranging such activities once their kids are older and in school all day. But it doesn't have to be that way. Doing something enjoyable with your kids just might make you look at each other in a whole new way, especially if you do it through a class or an event. When parent and child become students together, it puts them on the same level, at least for a while.
“I really like parents to come to class with their kids-they start sharing things and talking about what they're doing and what they like ,”said art teacher Pyper Dixon.
However, finding something new in common is a big choice for them, especially when kids get involved in sports and other afterschool activities. But it's possible to learn a new skill or hobby together.
That's certainly true of Lauren, 11, from Silver Spring ,who is in Dixon's class with her father, Dennis.“I was just going to drop her off,”Dennis said,“but Dixon persuaded me to stay.”
Now Lauren gets to nag _her father about doing his art homework.“He always leaves it to the last minute,”she said.“But then he’ll turn around to do amazing drawings ,”she added.“We have different styles of drawing, so it's interesting to talk it over with him.”
Without the Saturday morning art class, Dennis said, he would be reading the paper, and Lauren would be on her own in her room or on the computer. But they talk more now. “I can't think of an experience where you communicate with your kid so closely ,”he said.
40.The author raises the question at the beginning to________.
A. expect an answer B. criticize some parents
C. introduce the topic D. support his argument
41.What does Dixon think is the benefit of parent and child studying art together?
A. They will become equal. B. They will communicate more.
C. The child will learn art much better. D. The parent will learn something new.
42.The underlined word “nag” in the text probably means________.
A. urge B. help C. ignore D. teach
43.We can learn from the text that________.
A. Lauren used to talk a lot with her father
B. Dennis enjoys studying art with Lauren
C. Lauren dislikes her father's drawings
D. Dennis likes playing computer games

The room in which the boys were fed was a large stone hall, with a large pot at one end. The master, helped by two women, served the soup from this pot at mealtimes. Each boy was allowed one bowl of soup and no more. The bowls never needed washing, as the boys cleaned them with their spoons, trying to eat every bit of soup. Boys usually have excellent appetites. Oliver Twist and his companions slowly starved for three months until finally, they became quite wild with hunger.
There was one boy who was tall for his age and had a wild, hungry look in his eyes. He told his friends he had to have another bowl of soup each day. If not, he was afraid that one night he might eat the small young boy sleeping next to him. The boys had a meeting and decided that one of them should ask for more food after supper that evening. They wrote their names on pieces of paper and picked one out. It was Oliver Twist who was chosen.
In the evening, the boys sat down at the tables. The master stood by the pot,and the soup was served. It disappeared quickly. The boys whispered and made signs to Oliver. He stood up from the table and went to the master, with his bowl and spoon in his hands. “Please, sir,”he said,“I want some more.”The master was a fat, healthy man, but he went very pale.
“What?”said the master at last in a quiet voice.
“Please, sir ,”repeated Oliver,“I want some more.”
The master hit Oliver with his spoon ,then seized him and cried for help.Mr.Bumble
rushed into the room, and the master told him what Oliver had said.“He asked for more ?”Mr.Bumble cried.“I cannot believe it.One day they will hang the boy.”He took Oliver away and shut him in a dark room. The next morning a notice appeared on the workhouse gate.Five pounds were offered to anybody who would take Oliver Twist.

It's water that makes our daily lives possible. That's why protecting water sources is one of the primary missions at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. We provide safe, clean drinking water to 1.8 million residents in Prince George's and Montgomery counties.__51__
One way we protect water is through the watershed. The watershed reduces the pollutants reaching the reservoirs. They hold the water sources that provide 30 percent of our customers with drinking water. That's over 600,000 people. For many years, we have issued permits to allow limited recreational use of the watershed.__52__It's a quiet, beautiful area away from urban stress and traffic. And we use it ourselves and other activities to promote water and environmental awareness. __53__Last year, the WSSC issued new regulations with new restrictions impacting all users, including closing the watershed a month earlier in the fall and opening it a month later in the spring. We also limited horseback riding to the access roads. Our goal was and is to protect the watershed.
A very small but vocal group felt we should have consulted them first. Perhaps afterwards we should have. But I do want to make one thing very clear.__54__But we cannot allow the interests of a tiny group to override(不理会) the wellbeing
of the WSSC customers who drink the water from those reservoirs. There must be a balance. __55__So we hired a consultant to gather data, gather input from watershed users, and assess the condition of the watershed. We also asked them to look at our operations and management practices and provide the WSSC with findings and recommendations on how to make improvements.
It's time to work together to protect water and provide appropriate access to the rare jewel we call the watershed.
A. We certainly understand the attraction.
B. At no time did we consider closing the watershed entirely.
C. However, only a few people like saving water.
D. But most importantly it's about protecting water.
E. The government has taken some strong measures.
F. We take that responsibility very seriously.
G. A review of our watershed policies and regulations was overdue.
