I went over my grandmother’s house today and she didn’t have time for me. You see, the lady’s husband downstairs died and my Grandmother wanted to make some cookies for her. My grandmother did not analyze (分析) how the lady treated
her, or if the lady needed any cookies, or even if the lady would like the cookies. She didn’t think how much the lady has done for her. She simply began baking. My Grandmother turned 94 last week and this I believe is her secret to life. My
grandmother is generous (慷慨) and hard-working in a way that is rare for our time. She lives by a simple belief: if someone needs your help, you help. Never mind all the analyzing and thinking whether the person deserves (值得) or appreciates (感激) the help. My grandmother doesn’t sit around thinking about who might be making use of her: she simply does what is needed. At 94, she is busy in life. She is making a
blanket for a new great grandchild, and worried that I don’t have enough kitchen towels for my home. She is bringing soup to a sick neighbor, and teaching the new wife of her cousin (who is 88) how to cook Italian food. My grandmother had every right to give up, but she didn’t — and amazingly life did bring her good things, like a husband with twinkling blue eyes who was much ahead of his time and believed that men should do an equal amount of cooking and cleaning in the home, three beautiful children (my father and two aunts), 22 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. My grandmother is not afraid to give someone she barely knows a bowl of soup. She never keeps herself out of the world.
49. The reason why my grandmother made cookies for the lady downstairs is that ________.
A. she thought the lady was too busy
B. she would make them as thanks to her
C. she thought she should do something for the lady at the special time
D. they had had an agreement before
50 In the writer’s opinion, ________.
A. my grandmother has a secret way of living
B. my grandmother does everything on careful consideration
C. few people are as generous as my grandmother now
D. my grandmother will get something in return
51. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. My grandmother cares for her children even some strangers.
B. My grandfather does not treat women in an unfair way.
C. This is a family in which there are nearly 30 people now.
D. My grandmother never keeps everything for herself.
52.We may infer from the text that the writer ________.
A. thinks his grandmother is living a tired life
B. thinks his grandmother is doing what she should do
C. thinks his grandmother should not be so kind
D. is proud of his grandmother

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 4 million people die each year from the effects of smoking tobacco (烟草). That number is increasing.
WHO officials expect 150 million people to die from tobacco use in the next twenty years. Seven in ten of those deaths will be in developing countries. These numbers are frightening. Yet people around the world continue to smoke.
It is not easy to stop smoking. However, doctors say you will live longer if you do stop smoking. You will feel better and look better. You will also protect the health of family members who breathe in your smoke.
The American Cancer Society says there is not just one right way to stop smoking. It says that one method or a unit of methods may be successful. These include attending self-help programs or following directions in a book. The group says any way to stop smoking that is legal, moral and effective is worth trying. This could include taking long walks or spending time in areas where smoking is not allowed. Also, you could eat a small piece of fruit instead of having a cigarette.
The American Cancer Society says the sooner smokers stop smoking, the more they reduce (减少) their chances of getting cancer and other diseases. It says blood
pressure returns to normal twenty minutes after a smoker smoking the last cigarette. Carbon monoxide (CO) gas levels in the blood return to normal after eight hours. In a day, the chances of a heart attack decrease. In a year, the risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker.

Nearly half of all women in the United States suffer from increased stress during the holidays. One of the reasons is higher levels of comfort eating, drinking and other things that can lead to weight gain. It is not uncommon for people to eat for comfort when they feel sad, angry, hopeless, bored or lonely. According to a survey, one in four people in the United States agrees that ―when I am feeling down or facing a
problem, I turn to food to help me feel better.‖ Comfort eating and unhealthy drinking increases among men too, but is more common among women. Forty-one percent of women in the survey agree that they eat for comfort during the holidays. Among men, 25 percent report holiday-season comfort eating.
Women still tend to do more of the planning, and more of the social and family
organizing for the holidays. ―Too true,‖ said Sissy McPhearson. ―My husband and I both work, and normally we divide household tasks equally. But during the holidays he doesn’t care as much about decorating(装饰)the house or wrapping
presents or hosting dinners — so I end up doing it all even though I work full-time.” McPhearson says that the stress of preparing for holidays, plus more invitations to go out, makes it easier for many to reach out for that extra drink. “I go out a lot more now, maybe three or four nights a week, and have a couple of drinks. Usually I just go out maybe once a week,‖ she said.
Among the healthier methods experts suggest to deal with the holiday stress are
saying no to that serving of delicious roast beef, lasagna(烤宽面条)or chilled glass of white wine. .
57. How many women do holiday-season comfort eating according to the survey?
A. 25%. B. 31%. C. 50% . D. 41%.
58. Who often do more of the family organizing during the holidays?
A. The father. B. The mother.
C. The parents. D. The children.
59. People go out and have drinks probably because ________.
A. they look forward to a new taste
B. they have found a peaceful place to relax in
C. of the cheap price of an extra drink
D. someone invites them for dinner
60. How should women deal with ―holiday stress‖ according to this passage?
A. Eat less delicious beef and drink less white wine.
B. Have more holidays.
C. Go to the gym after the holidays.
D. Go out to take invitations.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A – F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余项。
61.
Discover your company’s/department’s corporate culture to see if you’re fit. A job contains a range of personalities, life styles and interests. The corporate culture is where all of these things mesh (交错) together to create a set of norms and values that give identity to your company. For example, everyone at your job may wear shorts but you like to wear trousers. No one at your job smokes but you do, or all your coworkers like to get together and gossip but, you’d prefer to be alone. Not ―fitting in‖ may affect your advancement.
62.
People like to be around people that they can relate to. Besides the home, work is the second place where you’ll spend the majority of your time. So it’s vital to find
similar interests that you and your coworkers share as to pass your time there more smoothly. For example, did you and any of your coworkers graduate from the same school? Do you and any of your coworkers have common friends? or do your children
attend the same schools?
63.
You take on every project that’s handed to you. You rush to finish your work and offer to assist everyone else’s with theirs. You shorten your lunch or skip it all
together to respond to phone calls and emails with the hope that your boss will notice. HE WON’T! WORK SMART! Not hard. Take on only those things that will help to show your talents and your added value to the company.
64. You do it all the time. You rant and rave (大声叫嚷) about your boss’
incompetence and about how much of a fool he is. How much smarter you are and, how you can do his job 100 times better than he can – BLINDFOLDED. OK, that
may be true but, trying to outshine him will not get you that promotion. So join forces and help your boss look good by assisting him with his projects and by helping him to become more efficient and organized.
65.
Know the people that have seniority in your company and work to create an
alliance (联盟). Be aware though, that the key players may not be the CEO, the Director of Operations or the Senior Executive (主管). They may take the form of receptionist, doorkeeper or administrative assistant or someone who’s been with the company for years.

范文: Different Job Outlooks
Nowadays university graduates have different job outlooks. For most of them, to find a job with satisfactory pay is their most important wish while majority want to be self – employed. However, a certain number of graduates are not in a hurry to hunt for jobs. They are just waiting for better chances. Toward this point of view, some
experts warn that it is not wise to be just waiting. They advise that graduates should find a regular, full-time job as quickly as possible so that they can earn money to support themselves and get working experience, which will help to find a better
position later. Moreover, it might be more difficult to find a satisfactory job next year.

Discover your company’s/department’s corporate culture to see if you’re fit. A job contains a range of personalities, life styles and interests. For example, everyone at your job may wear shorts but you like to wear trousers. No one at your job smokes but you do, or all your coworkers like to get together and gossip but, you’d prefer to be alone. Not ―fitting in‖ may affect your advancement.
