茶花女 英文读后感

Reading report of The Lady of the Camellias.

During extracurricular time, I started reading The Lady of the Camellias. It is a very famous book which was written by Dumas, Alexandre, Fils.

Dumas, Alexandre, Fils was born in 1824 in Paris. He was considered as one of the most notable French dramatists of the nineteenth century. He was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas., the author of novels: The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. And this story is based on the Dumas affair. The name of the hero, Armand Dural, is a thin disguise for the author. Actually, Dumas tells the story in the third person as it was related to him by Armand Duval.

Having read the English version of The Lady of the Camellias which was so attractive that I stayed up late to read this works every night I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier for her poor status but noble heart.Let me tell you the first part of the tragic love story between Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval.

Marguerite Gautier was a young courtesan, in Paris in the mid 19 century. Margaret turned out to be a poor country girl. Then she came to Paris, and began a new career. Because she was very beautiful, lots of boys chase her crazily .She became very famous in that moment and was called “social star” in Paris. Because she always dressed up with a bunch of camellia, she was called "La Traviata".

A courtesan can’t have the true love. But she falls in love with Armand Duval who is a middleclass young man and Armand loved Marguerite very much. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

He had nothing more to ask of her. Nevertheless, though she was only a courtesan. He had anticipated for himself. Perhaps he poetize it a little, a hopeless

love, that the nearer the moment approached. It seems that Armand was not handsome or rich or elegant enough to possess such a woman, and he said to himself since they have to part soon, it would be better not to keep her appointed, he thinks, but to write and tell her his fears and leave.

From that he went on to unlimited hope, unbounded confidence. He dreamed incredible dreams of the future that Marguerite’s love should make his happier than all the maidenly loves in the world. Armand said to himself when he was waiting for meeting Marguerite. For Marguerite’s fragile physical state, she moves to the country. There in her new house, a confrontation between the jealous Armand and her rich admires took place. Finally, Marguerite made a choice between Armand and other admirers to show her love to Armand. After that, they lived a period of happy and peaceful life in the country.

However, Armand began to become depressed for he found that he was not able to support his Marguerite daily life. Marguerite had sold her horses and diamonds for their life secretly…..

Although Armand has given Marguerit lots of money, Marguerit didn’t satisfy. Marguerite needs the money. Armand felt so sorry when he listened it. He was forced to admit that he had no right to ask her anything now and then.

In the last three weeks, the Count G always appeared in her room. Armand had suffered deeply but in comparison with what he had suffered that night, he thought that was nothing. One midnight, Armand went to Marguerite’s house and he saw the Count G entered the Marguerite’s house. This made Armand felt very sad. Then he wrote a letter to Margaret and ended this letter with a little inappropriate irony. Armand thought if he met her again, he will left a different impression. She will believed that he will not remember her.

When he want to go, Margaret walked into his house. This made Armand surprised, he begged for her kindness. Margaret told him her the feeling of her heart. After this confession Marguerite forgave him and they have a dinner together.

A few days later, Margaret said that if Armand want to go a real country, they can go to Bougival. Armand agreed with her. One and a half hours later, they arrived in Bougival. They lived in a beautiful house in this country, and had a good time together. They often at night-time sit in the little wood above the house. There they

listened to the cheerful harmonies of evening, both of them thinking of the coming hours which should leave them to one another till the dawn of day. At other times they did not even let the sunlight enter their room. To that succeed a brief sleep, for, disappearing into the depths of their love, they were like two divers who only come to the surface to take breath.

Armand often found her sadly, and scenes of this kind often took place. Although he could not discover their cause, he could not fail to see in Marguerite signs of disquietude in regard to the future. She could not doubt her love, which increased day by day.

Fearing that so monotonous a life was beginning to weary her, he proposed returning to Paris , but she always refused, assuring him that she could not be so happy anywhere as in the country Prudence now came but rarely, but she often wrote letters which he never asked to see. He did not know what to think. Several days later, there came a letter from Prudence, and for a fortnight Marguerite seemed to have got rid of her mysterious gloom, for which she constantly asked his forgiveness, now that it no longer existed. And all the time Marguerite was more joyous and more affectionate than she ever had been.

Not only his love and his dignity would not let him act thus, but he was certain that, feeling as she did now, Marguerite would die rather than accept another lover.

Then Armand’s father wrote a letter to him, which told him that he was about to come and see him. I think Armand had always had a great respect and a sincere affection for his father. He replied that he had been traveling for a short time, and begged his father to let him know beforehand what day he would arrive, so that he could be there to meet him. I think he loved and respected his father very much.

Armand’s father wrote a letter to him, which told him that he was about to come and see him. I think Armand had a great respect and a sincere affection for his father. Marguerite expressed her truly feeling to Armand which moved Armand. She said that in the summer they will go to the country, not to a house like that, but to a house just big enough for two people. She said she did not want to drive her back into the life she had to lead once. Armand could not answer .Tears of gratitude and love filled his eyes, and he flung himself into Marguerite’s arms. I think it was possible to resist such devotion.

Then they went back joyously to Bougival, talking over their projects for the future, which, thanks to their heedlessness, and especially to their love, then saw in the rosiest light. Bur when his father arrived, he let Armand left Marguerite. His father wanted to compel him to do so and tried his best to persuade Armand.

Armand felt that his father would be right if it had been any other woman. Armand loved Marguerite so deeply. He was convinced that he was wrong with regard to Marguerite, Nevertheless, the tone in which his father said those last words was so kind. At last, he said he can’t leave her.

Then Armand and Marguerite spent the whole day in talking their projects for the future, as if they felt the need of realizng them as quickly as possible.

Because Armand insisted to love Marguerite, so his father found Marguerite and asked her to leave his son. Armand’s sister was to marry the man whom she loved; she entered an honorable family, which requires that Armand’s family had to be no less honorable. The family of the man who was to become his little sister’s husband had learned what manner of life Armand was leading in Pairs, and had declared to me that the marriage must be broken off if Armand continues this life.

For his family’s reputation, Marguerite agreed to leave Armand. She felt that it was her duty because she loved Armand so much to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. However, Armand didn’t know anything about this conversation. So when he knew Marguerite left him, he felt angry and decided to revenge her.

Armand didn’t know all things were misunders tanding. And at that time, Marguerite was ill and might die of this illness. Marguerite had a wish; she hoped she could saw Armand again before she dies. But it is a pity that Armand didn’t visit her. Soon, Marguerite dies. When Armand knew the truth, he felt very regret and very sad. Through Marguerite’s dies he knew how deep about Marguerite’s love

I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”. Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings.. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Through this novel, we can see how difficult about the love between Armand and Marguerite.

As the book said that, there are two ways to pursuit women. One is money, the other is love. At that time, Armand had some money, but it was not enough to pay for Marguerite. So love is the only way to pursuit Marguerite. He not only made Marguerite to be his mistress, but also made her believed that it was the true love between them.

Maybe because Marguerite was a prostitute, she valued emotion more. To be loved by a pure young girl, to be the first to reveal to her the strange mystery of love, is indeed a great happiness. She considered Armand’s love as the true love, and she didn ’t hesitate anything, even though dedicating all things. But faced of the Marguerite’s love, Armand had always refused ro believe that prostitutes will have true love. His suspicion occupied his mind, and the third day he recognized Margaret deceived him and made a humiliation. Under the action of vanity, he immediately regretted.

So we can believe that, in the heart of Armand, vanity was more important than love. Maybe the true thing that he really wanted was the posses of a debutante, not an ordinary women ’s love. As Marguerite said that they had no friends, and they had selfish lovers who spent fortunes, riot on them, as they said, but on their own vanity. People always said, “True love often can make the person better ”. Armand did not became better, but became more corrupted. In addition to enjoy the vanity and happiness, he spent the whole day to waste money. He did not recognize that the money was actually from several men’s supports. He never thought of how to make Marguerite live in a normal life. We can see clearly that Armand ’s love was so insignificant.

In contrast with that, the true love made Marguerite became sublime. She determined to abandon all vanity and luxury, and lived a new life with Armand. She wanted to say goodbye to the past, and rented a quiet house far away from the dusty in society. We can not deny that Armand was really loved Margaret, but he did not believe that Margaret really loved him. His heart was full of hatred, full of hate. Of course, we also had to admit that, Armand was still loved Margaret, although the way that he expressed his love was not right. He can’t understand love completely.

I think, if there are more sincerity and trust, less vanity and suspicion, perhaps there will be a different ending.
