(A)

Throwing waste into a volcano sounds like a neat way to get rid of at least some of the mountains of waste we produce, but in reality it is a bit more difficult and dangerous!

“For a volcano to be able to effectively digest waste material it would have to be actively erupting,” says Dr Alanna Simpson, a researcher at Geoscience Australia.

We don’t have any active volcanoes in Australia. Throwing garbage into a dormant(休眠的) volcano, such as Mt Gambier in South Australia, as a way of removing waste would be useless as it may not erupt for hundreds of thousands of years.

“Putting waste into this volcano would destroy its natural beauty and appeal,” says Simpson. Of course, a volcano that is actively erupting is a pretty dangerous place to hang out. Approaching the mouth of a volcano with a garbage truck full of rubbish would be extremely “Not only is there lava(熔岩), such as with the Hawaiian volcanoes, there may also be poisonous gases, rocks and lava being erupted into the air,” explains Simpson.

In fact, erupting volcanoes are often considered so dangerous that people are typically moved out from around the vent(火山口).

Volcanoes, whether active or dormant, are also often considered places of extreme natural beauty and many are protected as national parks.

So throwing our waste into volcanoes isn’t the simple solution it might seem. Maybe we should just think about using less and recycling more.

65.According to this passage, putting waste into a dormant volcano would ______?

A. cause danger B. resulted in nothing

C. bring destruction to nature D. poison people

66. What is Dr Simpson’s attitude towards the suggestion of throwing waste into volcanoes?

A. She is in favour of it. B. She is against it.

C. She doesn’t reveal her opinion. D. She partly agrees with it.

67. What does the underlined word “hazardous” mean in Paragraph 5?

A. Dangerous. B. Exciting. C. Difficult. D. Effective.

68. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A. What should we do with volcanoes? B. An ideal way to deal with rubbish.

C. A problem of rubbish. D. Why don’t we throw waste into volcanoes?

Tips on Finding a Babysitter

Interview and find the babysitters, who are responsible, honest, patient, positive and caring. Here are some questions you may want to ask:

·How long have you been babysitting?

·What age groups have you worked with?

·Have you taken any babysitting training or first aid courses?

For example, you probably wouldn’t want a 12-or 13-year-old babysitter taking care of a child under three.

·If an overnight stay is required, the sitter should be older.

·Many capable babysitters are preteens or young teens. However, if your sitter is under the age of 16 and something happens to your children while you are away, you are legally responsible.

69. Which of the following questions will NOT probably be asked when you interview a

babysitter according to the passage?

A. Have you taken a course on babysitting?

D. If a baby sitter is 12 or 13 years old, she/he can look after a 3-year-old baby.

(C)

Have you ever considered that what may be normal to you and to me may be strange to others? Why is that so? Not all changes can be attributed to tradition or custom. And what causes these differences in the first place? How did some of them become “traditional”?

In Thailand, it is very rude to walk into a person’s house with your shoes on. Shoes are lelt at the front door. Not a silly idea really for one leaves all the litter of the streets outside where it belongs.

Also in Thailand it is considered rude to cross your legs in company and to point your toes at another person. The feet, as the lowest part of the body, are given the lowest respect. Pointing a toe is Equally, the head is the most important part of the body and should never be touched by another. Children in most Western countries are familiar with being patted on the head and consider it a compliment. In Thailand, however, it is extremely rude.

In Thailand and some other Asian countries, when two people meet it is the practice to hold the two hands together in a prayer position. It is called a whai in Thailand and takes the place of the Western handshake. Once again this is a much more hygienic greeting as there is no body contact. The height of the hands raised shows the importance of the person to whom the whai is made. The most common whai between two equals is with the tip of the fingers at nose level. When a person of a lower status meets a person of a higher status, the former raises the hands to forehead height and the latter to chest height. It is a very convenient way to greet a friend with a whai in a crowded room where personal contract is difficult. It seems so much more dignified and sincere to greet with a whai rather than a wave.

It is those customs which travelers consider “odd” that make travel worthwhile.

4

72. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “demeaning” (in Para. 3)?

A. Important B. Painful C. Shameful D. Impolite

B. Whai is the only way to greet people in Thailand.

C. The advantages of greeting people with a whai.

D. The differences between ways of greeting.

74. We can infer from this passage that _____.

A. travelers may be surprised by foreign customs

B. traditions causes differences among countries

C. Western children don’t like being patted on the head

D. the higher one’s status is, the less often one returns the whai

75. The purpose of this passage is to _____.

A. introduce the customs of Thailand

B. explain why people travel

C. stress the importance of respecting others

D. help people understand and follow different customs

(D)

Russia’s space program hopes to work closely with NASA and the European Space Agency to build two spaceships capable of taking a crew to Mars, supporting them on the planet for up to two months and safely bringing them home, said Nikolai Anfimov, head of the Central Research Institute of Machine-Building.

NASA officials have not mentioned any such project. In the past, NASA has said health issues related to human space flight had to be resolved first --- for example, figuring out how to protect humans from deep-space radiation as well as the muscle and bone deterioration experienced by astronauts in zero-gravity.

NASA spokeswoman Delores Beasley said Friday that the Russians have not submitted any formal plan and that the agency would not comment on the proposed trip before then. Because of demands from Congress to scale back costs, human travel to Mars has not been on NASA’s plan recently.

Landing humans on Mars has long been a dream of Russian space scientists. But even in the heyday of the Soviet space program, when Moscow reported success after success, its attempts to reach the Red Planet were marked by failure. Soviet scientists began whispering about a “Mars curse”.

The Soviet Union started Mars exploration in 1960 by launching two unmanned spacecrafts. Both failed even to make it as far as Earth’s orbit. One resulted in an engine explosion that scattered debris and contamination over the Baikonur launch pad in one of the worst accidents in Soviet space history.

That was followed by repeated attempts and often repeated disappointment. The bad luck for Russia continued on Nov. 16, 1996, when the Russians launched an ambitious $300 million spacecraft, Mars 96. They hoped it would prove that despite economic struggles after the Soviet breakup, they could still run a first-rate space program. Mars 96 suffered an engine failure just after launch and crashed into the Pacific Ocean.

NASA’s Mars program, plagued by its own series of setbacks, got back on track earlier this year when the unmanned Mars Odyssey spacecraft entered orbit around the planet and began mapping the mineral and chemical makeup of the surface.

76. NASA is sure they have a great danger in deep space exploration, which is not conquered yet.

That is _____.

A. landing on Mars B. zero gravity

C. deep radiations D. health issues

77. According to the passage, the “Mars curse” indicates _____.

5

A. Russians had great experience in reaching Mars in past years

B. Russians had more failures in Mars exploration in past years

C. Russians are frightened of reaching Mars in these years

D. Americans have found a good way to deal with Mars problems

78. In 1960, Soviet Union had two space explorations, but ______.

A. both of them exploded on Mars B. both of them failed in Earth’s orbit

C. one spacecraft exploded on Mars D. one spacecraft exploded soon after its launch

79. Odyssey means in this passage a _____.

A. Greek epic B. spacecraft launched by USA

C. spacecraft launched by Soviet Union D. map of the Mars surface

Giving up smoking will most likely add seven years to one’s life. While many people try to give up and fail, it is not an impossible task. Follow these five tips, and you will be well on your way to

giving up smoking.

Success in all fields of life begins with firm determination. If you are weak in willpower, you can never do anything. However, if you make up your mind, once and for all, that you are giving up the habit, whenever you want a smoke, you will remember your promise and not give in.

If you sit around doing nothing there is a higher chance that you will light up a cigarette and relax. Fill your spare time with sports and energetic activities. Try to feel how good it is to get your blood circulating and to breathe in air deeply. If you are not the athletic type, then walking will have the same benefit as other kinds of sports.

If going to a bar means that you are going to have a drink and then light up, maybe it is better to avoid that place for the time being. Once you have truly stopped smoking and you feel how good it is, you can go anywhere and not be tempted. But while you are in the transition phase, it is better to carefully choose where you will spend your recreational time.

Whenever you get a desire to put a cigarette in you mouth, replace it with something that will help you rather than harm you. Drinking small amounts of water throughout the day is not only a good way to help you give up smoking, but it is also a great way to stay healthy. You should drink

6

eight glasses of water per day, if you can. If you need to put something solid in your mouth, then eat a piece of fruit.

Tell them that you are giving up smoking for health reasons. Your true friends will support you and not offer you cigarettes. Your family and loved ones will similarly support your efforts and help you to avoid situations where you may feel you have to smoke because of social pressure.
