A

Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.

Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.

Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.

Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”

However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.

Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”

It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down.

Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much

that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies include painting the classrooms of shabby schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “

Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.

I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.

Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out.

After completing my training, I was sent to the village that was small and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me. Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and I returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流) . Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way -- by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.

Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell

into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.

The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.

As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

A. By collecting information from beachcombers.

B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.

C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.

D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.

Oseola McCarty spent more than 75 years washing and ironing other people’s clothes. As a laundrywoman, she was paid only a few dollars each time. Certainly nobody would

consider her rich, so they were all amazed when Miss McCarty decided to donate $ 150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi.

The money was in fact her life savings. She could save such a large amount of money because she lived a very simple life. She never learned to drive, and when she wanted to go somewhere, she just walked. She never flew to anywhere till the donation(捐助),and in 50 years she had been out of the South only once. The house in which she lived was also a rather modest one her last uncle left her. Only after she became known in America did she begin to travel all over the country. Since then, she had been the subject of many interviews and articles and was even invited to the White House.

Her donation was for students who clearly needed financial help. She herself left school in the sixth grade and had never married or had children. She said to the reporters that the idea of helping somebody’s child go to college gave her much pleasure.

Parents feel that it is difficult to live with teenagers On the one hand, parents go mad over…On the other hand, teenagers lose their patience 也可知。

3. C 词语复现 根据后面的clothes thrown on the floor可知,messy(凌乱的)与clothes thrown on the floor(衣服被乱扔在地上)是上下义复现。

5. C 词语复现/逻辑推断 将此空the towel in the bathroom与前面的clothes thrown on the floor(衣服被乱扔在地上)对比,可知,drop 与throw 是近义词复现。或者与后面的not cleaning up their room是并列的关系,即把毛巾丢在浴室。

6. A 词语复现 比较have different 与后面的However, some approaches, 可以确定approaches是原词复现。

8. A 逻辑推断 yell(大声叫喊) at …for their untidiness(凌乱),but 稍后(later)又为他们整理房间,这样的父母才会有更少的机会改变他们的行为(have fewer chances of changing their children’s behavior),即几乎无法改变他们的行为。

9. A 词语复现 behavior与上文的throw clothes, drop the towel, not clean up their room 是上下义复现。

10. C词语复现 根据后面的例子(解释说明的作用)teenagers who don’t help their parents with the shopping don’t find their favorite drink in the refrigerator可知让孩子体验自己的行为的后果(consequences)会做得更好,consequences(结果)与don’t find their favorite drink in the refrigerator是上下义复现。

Communication is a two-way process.

或者talk to 与lend an ear to(倾听)的意思相对,是词语同现。

14. B 词语复现 根据第5空的句子parents blame them for the towel in the bathroom, not cleaning up their room可知,scold与blame 是同义词复现。

20. why/ how

However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them可知选D。

由第二段最后两句 “Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music”可知选B,Samuel按照父母的意愿是想做律师的,而不是做音乐家。

Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised和第三四句 “I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note”可知,他不用看音符就能演奏钢琴,故选C。

Samuel says confidently, “It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”

由第三段第三句“I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters可知,选A。

本题是问“谁想出这句话来的”,由第四段中的 “It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper”可知,是Anne Herbert想出这句话来的。

由第一段第二句 “My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical”可知,作者的大学教育注重的是理解知识,选A。

In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family(总之,我并不是轻易决定申请灯塔计划的,我的家人也一样不是轻易决定的)和第三段首句Eventually, however, I won the support of my family(然而,最后我赢得了家人的赞同)可以推断出,作者是同家人讨论商量过的。

由第二段的第二句 “After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone”可推知,作者面临了与其他候选人的激烈竞争,故选D。

Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family可知,一到达这个村庄时,他受到村民的热情接待,故选C。

由最后一段第一句all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did…and returned to the United States a different man (他当初觉得奇怪或不寻常的所有事现在都不再觉得奇怪了…… 由though I did not get anywhere with the local language(虽然我没有学习当地语言并没有取得成效)可排除B(他学会了用当地语言进行交流);选项C(在他回家前已经克服了所有的缺点),文中既找不到任何信息依据,也

由前面的so many shoes和后面的to try and match(匹配) left and right shoes to sell or wear,特别是sell,可知是建立交易市场(set up trading fairs),故选B。

由第二段二、三、四句 “He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment”可知,选C。

Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them (serious beachcombers) and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed及其后几句可知,选A,“通过海滩清理者收集信息”。

Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean可知,选D。

However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way---by studying movements of random floating garbage,由此可知选C。

46. B 题中organize an outdoor activity, as an instructor与选项B中的organize sports activities and other outdoor pursuits, as an instructor相匹配。

Oseola McCarty, an ordinary worker with a thrifty(节俭的) lifestyle, donated a great deal of money to a university, which aroused public attention and earned her widespread social recognition. In return, she received a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Virtuous(贤惠) and warm-hearted, the lady concerned has donated a considerable amount of saving to help college students struggling with financial difficulties, thereby(从而) motivating people at any other corner of the world to participate in this affectionate(深厚感情的) activity.

From where I stand, not only will the lady’s generosity paint a very brilliant blue print for the future of those students in want of money, but also it will rekindle(重新点燃)their faith in life by convincing them that their life goal is elevating and worth trying.

Given the choice, I would make donations to those who still live under the bottom line of the modern living condition. Convincing arguments as follows can be made to support my stance. For one thing, generous and selfless dedication(奉献) may take indispensable(不可缺少的)assistance to them, . For another, just as an Indian old saying goes, “Roses in her hand; flavor in mine.” That is to say, great satisfaction would step slowly and gracefully(优雅地) in to the mercy-producers’souls as well.

A. what caused the shipping accident

B. when and where the shoes went missing

C. whether it was all right to use their shoes

D. how much they lost in the shipping accident

43. How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?

A. By collecting information from beachcombers.

B. By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.

C. By searching the web for ocean currents models.

D. By researching ocean currents data in the library.

44. Ebbesmeyer is most famous for ___________________.

A. traveling widely the coastal cities of the world

B. making records for any lost objects on the sea

C. running a global currents research association

D. phoning about any doubtful objects on the sea

47. C 题中I can help the elderly and the disabled与选项C中the physically and mentally handicapped, …the elderly相匹配。

48. D 题中if only I could stay in Spain ([欧洲]) as an exchange student与选项D中的studying at a foreign university in Europe相匹配。

49. F 题中I’m well prepared to work as a language instructor与F中的Language Teachers Abroad相匹配。

50. E 题中wildlife, I specialize in zoology, and I’m a good observer与monitoring wildlife相匹配。 Richard Avis, who was born on December1st, 1974, is a British man. With the purpose of understanding the meaning of successful life in different cultures, Richard, from 2011, began to seek time twins around the world. Due to the help of the local media, so far he has succeeded in finding 32 time twins, including 17 males and 15 females coming from 13 countries. In addition, their positions include government officials, athletes, drivers, teachers, artists and so on. Not only does Richard intend to find 40 time twins before his birthday but also he is going to write a book according to this experience.

To bring as many angel-like smiles as possible to our society, we should practice more beneficial performance by leading a thrifty life.
