Abstract
It is of great practical significance to offer college students the intercultural communication curriculum, which will be benefit for them to enhance their ability of English practical application. This paper states how I feel and what I have gotten after this course as well as the cultural differences between Chinese and western countries I have observed from the sitcom—Friends . The importance of developing the ability of intercultural communication will also be mentioned in this paper.
Key words:intercultural communication, Olympic
In this term, I had a new recognition of intercultural communication. I learnt that “Study at work, in practice, experience, summed up the completion of mission.” Miss Feng gave us many opportunities to show our English abilities on the course. It not only a learning progress, but also a communication process. Now I set forth the feeling on this course simply.
·About the project
During this final project, seven classmates and I cooperatively completed the study upon „the cultural differences between Chinese and western countries from the reflection of Olympics‟. The form of performance part was taken by Zheng Xiaoli and me. I utilized the comparison about the differences on admission ceremony, torch relay, and the release of doves between the London and Beijing Olympic Games. Additionally, I took charge of making the PowerPoint.
It was not the first time for our group to cooperate together. In the past three years, the process of confliction and consensus contributed a fixed group stereotype. In this project, after the group leader assigned the responsibilities, four parts of the article were efficiently finished and submitted to me the key points to emphasis that should be included in the PowerPoint.
To emphasis the comparison significantly, I took advantages of the recent popular Metro style(Windows 8采用的一种以明显的色块、简练的文字、清晰的图片组成的界面风格) which has lighted colors and striking key points to make our PowerPoint more distinct .But was there any aesthetic fatigue(视觉疲劳) using a sole interface? To avoid this problem, I devised a simple but gorgeous interaction interface combining into these four sections, making our PowerPoint both brief and fashionable entirely.
To make the task easy to do, the raw material which our group members gave to me included a plenty of articles and images. However, we met a little bit of trouble during we organized data: there were too many text resources(文字性描述过多) and the image clarity was not high enough(图片清晰度不高). We discussed together when we run into problems. The modification about Modern Culture impressed me
most. The first draft could not show the theme clearly to the spectator because of the complicate textual description. We must change greatly. Our group members, Min Xiaofang and Chen Juan, cut the content all night without complain. We all hope our report is perfect. Furthermore, our group ‟s elaborate PowerPoint has more than 60 pages, so this work cost a lot of time. At first I planed to finish the PowerPoint before weekend, but it postponed to Monday afternoon even though I worked late everyday. We practiced presentation hard to make sure we can strictly control the speech time according to "rehearse timing" mode(“排练计时”模式).
I felt very regretful that I was not completed my own section perfectly for my poor speaking and nervous presentation, although I had prepared it again and again. What‟s more, I nervously forgot to open the „rehearse timing‟ mode (我忘记了在课堂演示作品时打开“排练计时”模式), which could help our group members to coordinate the time. Had we any chances to perform it again, we would afford an more orderly arrangement(更加有条不紊).
We were satisfied with our performance. We commited ourselves to the work, we have harmonious cooperation and we make a perfect project. Our group members understood each other instead blame the one who made mistakes. I find the price is affordable when everyone wants the work be better.
Besides our group is the last one to display. We were glad to have opportunities to learn from other groups ‟ advantages and we can improve our work. I like the project about „the cultural differences between Chinese and western countries from the music‟ most. It had two highlights. One was my classmates Wang Liuyang and Zhang Yinglan spoke in fluent English, the other one was the style of their work and the way they express themselves. As the last group, the control of time is an important problem. Though there was little time for class when they begun, they used humor language to attract spectators ‟ attention. Excellent speech with familiar music made the core concept easy to understand.
·Cultural differences in my eyes
When it comes to differences between Chinese and western what I have observed,
some classic scenes in the television sitcom Friends jump into my mind. Although I have no chance to contact with western people, I am a die-hard fan of Friends . Watching the sitcom with 236 episodes(集) for three or four times, I can even know every scene by heart. The Friends truly reflects American life attitude from 1990s to early 21st century. We can recognize some cultural differences between Chinese and western based on its rich cultural connotation.
1. Family effect
In the minds of Americans, all man are created equal and all have rights to pursue freedom and happiness. The idea of equality has penetrated into all areas of American lives and thoughts. The interpretation of family relations is no exception (对于家庭关系的解读也不例外). In Friends , one of many complicated relations is that kind of marriages of protagonists‟ parents. Rachel's, Monica and Ross's parents were divorced, while such kind of family environment did not affect the healthy growth of children.
In view of family, westerners are more indifferent than Chinese. When a marriage breaks up, the parents won‟t be forced together con cerning their children. Relatively speaking, without this layer between parents and children, they are more likely to get along like friends. They can talk about any topic due to mutual respect.
Nevertheless, family relationships are of much importance in Chinese culture. Juniors should respect and obey elders and elders are always try to maintain their dignity and image. Such a pattern is easy to cause a gap between parents and children, and thus cause a social phenomenon which is the generation gap.
2. Friendship
In Friends , the six protagonists met dramatically. Because of pursuing boys, Monica and Rachel against each other; Ross who had a PhD always said something that you don't understand; Joey is a foodie; nobody knows Chandler‟s occupation. In spite of this, they still trust and support each other. They believe in their friends ‟ feelings toward them, supported their decision, and tolerate their weakness and mistakes. The most important is the way they express friendship is extremely direct. They can continue to be friends after confession, because as long as you have the
courage to confess ,any mistake can be forgiven in western eyes.
In the aspect of making friends, Chinese people pay attention to willing to live and die together(同生共死). They believe that a friendship with pain experienced together is worth to be treasured. So they usually don't pay much feelings at the beginning of a relationship.
What‟s more, when Chinese people express their views, they tend to be specious and rarely point out others‟ faults directly. Excessive words will hurt each other even between best friends.
In my opinion,a miracle, Friends as an example, typically shows the cultural differences between Chinese and western countries. As we all known, ten seasons of Friends , which shoots from 1994 to 2004, has never been changed the protagonists. Even though they have subjected to obstacles such as marriage, pregnancy, drug addiction, it has not even bit of adverse effects on the shooting process, which is not possibly happened in China. Like the popular comedy Love Apartment, Friends has an advanced plot and shooting style similarly. Due to the limited rewards and unsatisfied contract, it is unavoidable to change the protagonists during the second season. Chinese people, who are easy to be manipulated by personal profits and reputation, are lack of a sense of central force, even though they are known to be loyal to others.
