That must be the story of innumerable couples, and the pattern of life it offers has a homely grace. It reminds you of a placid rivulet, meandering smoothly through green pastures and shaded by pleasant trees, till at last it falls into the vasty sea; but the sea is so calm, so silent, so indifferent, that you are troubled suddenly by a vague uneasiness. Perhaps it is only by a kink in my nature, strong in me even in those days, that i felt in such an existence, the share of the great majority, something amiss. I recognized its social value. I saw its ordered happiness, but a fever in my blood asked for a wilder course. There seemed to me something alarming in such easy delights. In my heart was desire to live more dangerously. I was not unprepared for jagged rocks and treacherous shoals if I could only have change--change and the excitement of the unforeseen.

Superstition is a part of British Culture today. Although superstition was more alive a hundred years ago, there are still many superstitious people around now, both young and old.
All superstition has grown from something, since there is no smoke without fire. Who was the first one to decide that opening an umbrella in a house is bad luck? Who was the first to walk under a ladder and suffer the consequences? Who hung a horseshoe the wrong way up, smashed a mirror and spilled the salt? Who first branded Friday 13th as a day on which luck would run out?
Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century life was hazardous, and the central feature of day-to-day existence was a preoccupation with finding explanations for fortune and misfortune. Religion, diseases and fire might have been the most essential elements in the background of the beliefs of superstition. Even though we are not searching for the same answers today superstition is still with us as a tradition.

Whenever women’sliberation is mentioned, there are often two reactions. One is that this is just a bunch of frustrated women. The other is that this is something that is a white thing, which doesn’tconcern black women.
The truth is that the exploitation of black women goes deeper than that of white women. Unity of all black women is needed to push for such demands as self-determination, equal pay, free abortion and child-care
centers. We should realize the need for the women of the black nation to have a liberation movement of women as part of our movement for total liberation of our people.
The black man has been led to believe that office and skilled jobs are given to the black woman by the white capitalists to make the black man feel inferior. In reality, there aren’tenough jobs for everyone, and the black woman suffers the most from low pay and unemployment.

Most full-time students at American universities must have health insurance. This is because health costs in the United States are high. Colleges are not able to pay the costs if students suffer serious accidents or sickness.
Many American colleges have health centers where doctors and nurses treat students ’medical problems. This service may be included in the cost of attending college. Health insurance is usually needed for extra services.
Students may already be protected under their parents ’health insurance polices. If not, many colleges offer their own insurance plans.
Students also can buy independent insurance policies from insurance companies. The details of such policies differ, depending on where the student lives. Usually, these policies pay for doctor visits, treatment of injuries and hospital costs.
All in all, people in the United States are responsible for their own medical costs. These can be extremely high in cases of serious illness or accidents. The purpose of health insurance is to make sure that these costs will be paid for.

I have heard her say that all my life. Now, lying in bed, coming awake in the dark, I feel the fury of her energy fighting the good-for-nothing idler within me who wants to go back to sleep instead of tackling the brand-new day.
Silently I protest:I am not a child anymore. I have made something. of myself. I am entitled to sleep late. “Russell, you’vegot no more gumption than a bump on a log.”
She has hounded me with these battle cries since I was a boy in short pants.
“Makesomething of yourself!”

“Havea little ambition, Buddy.”

Nothing. No tracks but my own are stitched into the dusting of fresh snow, white as birch bark, that fell during the night. No flittering shadows in the trees, not a sliver of bird song in the air.
What sun there is this time of year shines weakly, half-heartedly through the white gauze of clouds, offering not even the slightest pretense of warmth. A shiver runs through me as I stomp my feet for warmth and then listen again for any sign of life. The only sound is from the bare tips of branches chattering like teeth.
At first glance, nature doesn’tseem to have invested much in this late-winter day. The forest can seem like a rough etching —barren, lifeless and gray. There are subtle beauties —pine branches tipped in white, the pale-blue glow of moonlight off the snow. But this deep into winter, you look less for beauty than for signs that spring has not been forgotten.
Unit 11

I love flowers and hence have taken to growing them. But, short of time to do research and experiments in flower cultivation, I an no gardener at all. I merely take flower cultivation as a pleasure of life. I really don ‘t care whether or not my flowers will put forth plump and nice-looking blossoms. I ‘ll be delighted as long as they can blossom. In summer, flowers and plants growing in luxuriance in my small courtyard will leave little open space as a playground for the little cats, so they have to sport about on the roof instead. I grow many flowers, but none of them are exotic or rare ones. It is difficult to grow a precious flower species. And I feel bad to see a good flower dying of illness. I don ‘t want to often shed tears over that. But Beijing ‘s climate is more or less unfit for growing flowers. Freezing in winter, windy In spring, and either to dry or too often visited by rain storms in summer. While autumn is the best of all, it is often plagued by sudden frosts. In a climate like this, it is for beyond my capacity to grow precious southern breeds of flowers. Therefore, I only grow flowers and plants that are hardy, enjoy a high survival rate and are able to struggle on their own for survival.

Movie experts say Walt Disney was responsible for the development of the art of animation. Disney’sartists tried to put life into every drawing. That meant they had to feel all the emotions of the cartoon creatures:happiness, sadness, anger, fear. The artists looked at themselves in a mirror and expressed each emotion:a smile, tears, a red face, wide-opened eyes. Then they drew that look on the face of each cartoon creature. Disney’sart of animation reached its highest point in 1940with the movie Pinocchio. The story is about a wooden toy that comes to life as a little boy. Disney’sartists drew two-and-a-half-million pictures to make Pinocchio . The artists drew flat pictures. Yet they created a look of space and solid objects. Pinocchio was an imaginary world, yet it looked very real.
