Lack of adherence to standard business ethics can not only lead to being fired, but is also a criminal offence for some of them. Discrimination, sexual harassment, espionage, theft, and bribery are illegal practices in many western countries. Companies usually have clearly defined standards regarding acceptance of gifts from customers, clients, or associates. Anything beyond a preset monetary value must be declared or turned in to the company.
Conversation
In this conversation, Shelley Marshall and Eric Stephens are employees at a major corporate head office. Shelley is chiding Eric for his lack of adherence to business ethics.
Shelley: Eric, why don’t you do some work for a change?
Eric:: What do you mean? I get my work done.
Shelley: True, but it doesn’t look like you’re working too hard right now.
Eric:: I’m reading the newspaper to stay tuned to the business world.
Shelley: That’s not very truthful, Eric. I’ve noticed you spend more time scanning the Want Ads than anything else.
Eric:: You know, Shelley, sometimes I think you don’t like me. Is it because I’m from the south? Shelley: This has nothing to do with discrimination, Eric! I’m talking about your lack of ethics. Eric:: You’re always getting on my back, Shelley. I could almost make a case for sexual harassment. Shelley: Don’t be so thick-headed, Eric. I’m not being personal, here. I’m only thinking of
the company’s best interests. You spend too much time on personal phone calls, surfing the net on sites that have nothing to do with our company’s business, and doing personal emails. Why can’t you be more honest and admit that I’m right?
Eric:: I guess I do spend too much time on non-business affairs. I really admire your integrity, Shelley. I think I’ll go see the boss and see if he has anything else for me to do. See you later!
Shelley: Eric,
Eric::
Shelley:
Eric::

一,捍卫公司所定的道德规范;
二,强化公司在业界的形象和声誉;
三,维持公司的道德责任感,以诚信为原则;
四,永远以客户的需求为第一考虑;
五,控制生产和服务成本,获取合理利润;
六,确保安全性和效率;
七,不要做违法和不道德的事情;
Practice
Form a group of four people. One of you is a manager. One is an honest employee, and another is a dishonest employee. The fourth person is a police officer.
The honest employee must report some wrongdoing by the dishonest employee to the manager. The manager reports it to the police. When the police officer arrives, the dishonest employee is called in for questioning.
Summary
People make decisions within organizations every day. For the most part, they do so with the interests of the organization in mind. The personal values of a manager or employee are not usually the underlying aspect of the decision making. The challenge for organizations is to ensure that decisions are not only profitable, but that they are ethical as well.
