Tess ’s tragedy
The heroine of Tess of the Durbervilles is a ideal of the modern female writed by Thomas Hardy. In Hardy's world, Tess is the symbol of beauty and love . She is representing all the best aspects of Wessex: beauty, purity, kindness,modesty, kindness and tolerance. As a pure and kind girl, Tess was destroyed by bourgeois decayed ethics,hypocritical religion and unfair law. However, I think this is the main reason as to the character of Tess. To a certain extent, Tess wanted to turn against the traditional morality, but in a certain sense, she had become the defenders of traditional. On the one hand, this shows the traditional moral persecution of Tess. On the other hand, this shows Tess obedience to the male society is the cause of the tragedy.
Tess’s father wanted to get rid of the financial distress, so he asked Tess to have a relationship with the old lady Mrs.Durbervilles. The burden of the family and her own sense of responsibility had cast a shadow on her fate. In the face of Alec,she was feared. But she was so young ,ignorant,poor and helpless,so that Tess did not know how to avoid Alec,and finally her pure body was sullied by Alec. Tess is the victim of violence, she is innocent. She understood this point, but at the same time,
i n the people’s criticism she also thought herself as guilty. She chose to suffer it and keep silence. Tess measured if she is innocence according to the traditional view, she could not forget the disgrace given by Alec.
Tess went to another farm to make a living, it is a new start in her life. At the same time, Tess could pursue her own life with the enough economic base. However, she did not recognize that. Tess’s attitude of love reflect she was Lacking self identity.
Clay’s appearance destined to another tragedy of Tess. He loved Tess, but unlike Tess ’s love was so selfless and sincere. In his eyes, she is a symbol of purity, the perfect masterpiece. His love is too ideal. The traditional moral concept in his heart killed the true feelings of Tess. So when Tess confessed her past, clay idols completely collapsed. He could not accept the reality, and more than once said to Tess: "the woman I love is not you! Another boy like you ". If Alec destroyed Tess body, so Clay gave to Tess was the spirit of devastating blow.
But Tess did not realize that the clay’s narrow love, because on the one hand, Tess had been hurt. so in her heart she was desire for love and hoped to be loved and protected. So when she met clay, her love would be more strong. Tess regarded Clay as the angel. In this hot love ,Tess lost autonomy completely, becoming a slave of love. On the other hand, she still regarded herself as a "not net women", and should be condemned by society. She did not put Clay in the same position.
Tess's tragedy is the result of social suicide, but it can’t separated with the inherent contradictions of Tess character. In that background, the psychology of female was not perfect, and lacking of self-awareness, eventually became the booster her tragic life.
