The Comparison of View of Marriage
in Buddhism and Christianity
佛教与基督教中婚姻观的比较
Buddhism is earliest world religion. It appeared in 6th to 5th century BC and was introduced into China on or before the Qin dynasty. Buddhism developed rapidly in China and had a lot of buddhists in early times. Its main doctrines are bitter, set, arc, and road. Buddhists cultivating their mind and doing good things are the feature of Buddhism. For Christianity, it appeared in the first century. It is formed because the jews were suffering and Christianity was their spiritual ballast. Christian doctrines include believing Jesus, the ten commandments, believing immortal and entering paradise after death. Its characteristics are keeping devout to Jesus and believing god bless them.
The two religions both have very pious embracers. They both have their own doctrines and beliefs, and also their own standard and criterion of behavior. In following part, there will be a comparison of view of marriage in Buddhism and Christianity.
There are two kinds of embracers of Buddhism: one is the Buddhists of household, the other is ascetic, that is monk. For the Buddhists of household, their view of marriage is that marriage is the product of cause and effect, and it stem from human nature. They also think that people’s own will should be respected in the marriage. They oppose imposed marriage. Furthermore, they believe in that all living things are equality and against race and class discrimination in marriage. In addition, they think that the couple should be loyal to each other and object to extramarital affair and homosexual. Also, they advocate that the couple should respect each other and they value the stabilization of the family. But they have no objection to divorce. And if the marriage appeared rift, they encourage making peace. What’s more, there is a Buddha's marriage, and they swear to Buddha and sing the song of Buddhism in the wedding. But for monks, they are forbidden to have any marriage. They are required to keep the idea that sex is zero and empty.
The view of marriage in Christianity is set up according to Bile. They think that marriage is holy and inviolable. They believe that there are purpose to establish the marriage: the first is the man and woman serve for god together; the second is forming a family and starting a career; the third is carrying on the family line and having the seed of piety. Also, they think the relationship between couple is equal. The wife should be obedient to husband but not the menial obedience. It is respect and help her husband. And the couple should respect and love each other and realize the merit of each other. Christian insist monogamous marriage all the time. In their wedding, the priest will require bride and bridegroom swear that they will loyal to each other and stay together forever no matter what kinds of difficulties they meet with. They object to extramarital affair and bigamous marriage. They believe in that
love is the most basic thing in marriage. They advocate that one should marry with Christian but not non-christian. In order to keep the holy of marriage, they have a very strict requirement about divorce. They think people cannot divorce for no reasons. They hold the opinion that divorce is a kind of crime.
There are similarities and differences between Buddhism’s view of marriage and Christianity’s view of marriage. In similarities, first, they both think that the couple is equal and should be loyal and respect to each other. Second, they both insist the marriage basing on love and one’s own will, and object to impose marriage. Third, about divorce, they both nonsupport it. And in differences, first, the origin of marriage is different. In Buddhism, they think marriage stem from human nature. But the marriage in Christianity is based on the Bible and it is served for the god. Second, in Christianity, they advocate Christian should marry with Christian, but in Buddhism, it is free and no special requirement. And also the monks in Buddhism is not allowed to marry. Third, their opinion about divorce have some differences. The attitude of Christian is more uncompromising than buddhists. Buddhists just do not support divorce, but Christian think it is crime and very strict about it.
From the above description, we can ponder over that which is more reasonable and fitful to human between Buddhism and Christianity’s view of marriage. I think they both have reasonable and unreasonable point. What do you think? And next, I will present my opinions about it.
I think their opinion that marriage should based on love and one’s own will is very proper and reasonable. And the equal relationship between couple that they advocate is extremely good and very valuable even to modern marriage. Also their idea that the couple should be loyal and respect to each other is very meaningful. But in Buddhism, the rule that monks are not allowed to marry is unreasonable. It is a kind of imprisonment to human nature and it violates the law of nature. And I also think that Christianity’s view about divorce is improper. Their opinion that the marriage cannot be broken and divorce is crime is so extreme. If the couple do really unsuitable and can’t stay together any more, their marriage is meaningless and they should get a divorce. It is good for the couple. What’s more, I think Christianity’s view that Christian should marry with Christian is unreasonable. Marriage is free and everyone has his or her own belief, Christianity as a religion should not restrict their embracers’ marital choice. They just need to choose the person who they really love with.
Finally, I want to say that it is just my own opinions, everyone should have their own opinions.
